We did learn! Learnings from that completely unexpected season has helped us make this decision about 2021. In March 2020 we had to cancel United at very short notice, due to the unforeseen emergence of coronavirus. Every large event had to do the same because mass gatherings became impossible under government legislation. If we had not cancelled in March, our event would still have been impossible to hold but we would have accrued contractual production costs of >£2.5 million. Under that scenario, New Wine would likely not have survived. Cancelling in March turned out to be absolutely the right thing; and even though we had still incurred significant production costs they were much lower.
Thanks to your generosity, we have ridden that storm and were able to deliver our digital ‘United Breaks Out’ event free to view in the summer. We have also been able to retain staff and maintain activity levels, and we are following the Spirit’s leading and planning for fruitful days ahead. However, the impacts of coronavirus remain and are still likely for some months. The UK events industry (including Christian events) still has a difficult near future to navigate. We are determined not to be in the same situation in mid-2021 where the future of New Wine looks at risk and we are reliant on your generosity. We are stewarding what we have wisely and we’re learning from 2020 to protect you and us, both now and into the future.
